"Broader Horizons"
Solo Show by Aline Jansen

At Alliance Francaise de Miami
618 SW 8th Street Miami www.afmiami.org

Opening Reception in presence of the Artist
Friday April 17th 7-10pm

The creation of a paradoxical surface of abstract landscapes seems to characterise the new pictorial research of Aline Jansen. This geographical sensitivity takes its place in a tradition of abstract art modelling where multiple references mark her active sense of inquiry.

Aline Jansen’s paintings not only inscribe geometric forms of the earth but also those of the cosmos, onto concepts of Euclidean and non-Euclidean spaces. In fact, at this very moment how should we look at the earth when from high above the sky it is being scanned and the image of which being digitised by high quality software such as Google Earth ?

"Sentinels"
Solo show of latest works by
Christian Bernard aka NARBERO
visit the secret world of Narbero's journeys in Africa

There was a time, about 15 years ago, while still living in France, that I traveled a lot in Africa, and I was deeply impressed by the African people, who still had one foot in the past, with all their traditions and culture, and one foot in the contemporary world.
Both, the tribal tradition and native art were so strong. They greatly inspired me, but it is only for the past 2 years, that my work has become very influenced by all the semental and emotional "souvenirs". My work about the Sentinels is, obviously, a translation of African art sculpture and painting combined with specific African symbols.

7-11pm,
featuring Alissa Christine's "i love miami 365"

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the International Miami Book Fair and in collaboration with the francophone pavilion which this year's theme is "the comics galaxy", Damien B. Contemporary Art Center is proud to presents an international exhibition dedicated to the Art of graphic novels, comic strip, book illustrations, animations, cartoons...

Alex Baladi (Switzerland),
Regis Loisel (Canada),
Yves Swolfs (Belgium)

The 9th Art is the link between traditional literary narratives to a visual language of myth as seen in comic strips.

Once considered the lowest form of literature, denounced by parents, teachers and clergy for their corrupting on the minds and moral of youth, comics now command the attention of cultural critics and scholars of Art history.
Comics and cartoons are an indelible fact of American Life and consequently of American Art, and are central to the postmodern sensibility.
In contemporary Art the influence of the comic book’s draftsmen, fabulous graphic artists and cartoonists is predominant. Taking an in-depth look at the current phenomenon of cartoon-referencing work, its connection to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, when the artist as a reaction of Abstract Expressionism employed a common imagery found in comics strips .publicity, popular culture, consumer products .Roy Lichtenstein, Keith Haring cartoonist’s son , Andy Warhol, began approprieting comics iconography into their Art work , drawn to its mass appeal while using it to critique the commercial aspect of society. For the first time , huge canvas filled with images and text blown up from comic books where hung on gallery walls.
In today' Art, cartoon imagery is ubiquitous the new generation of artists influenced by pop Art and raised on TV created and comic - infused Art, Street Art, Graffity, Urban Art, video and the social and cultural factors that have shaped our understanding of the comics as a form of popular communication receiving a warm embrace from the art public.

During the opening reception, don't miss

Alissa Christine
will be capturing the vibrations of
"Resonance: A journey into the feeling of sound" -- An interactive experience created by Erik Thompson-Green

Sounds are directed into a resonance chamber to explore the vibrational quality of the echo.
The chamber is an installation of metallic cans which reverberate through varying levels of sound that you can feel.
Erik's inspiration is to get lost in the flow... and take everyone with him.

"STREETS"
Photo compositions by
PHIL STEIN

A few themes in contemporary culture are the use of multiple imagery, visual and musical sampling, multitasking, constant interruption, and immediacy of change. This work is an interpretation of these common aspects of our experience.

Phil Stein is a Photographer, although his work is more than just pure photography. Using printed copies of his own digital images he goes on to create compositions, combinations of the scene, mounted on rag board, wood and Plexiglas.
